Bern is not in the Old Town. It is one street outside it, on Aia — and that is the whole difference between waking up to a tour group and waking up to a courtyard.
A passage cut through the ground floor of a red brick building opens into a paved yard with two crab-apple trees that flower in May. Reception is behind the glass doors at the far end, and somebody is at it at every hour of the night.
Fifty rooms sit above and around that yard on three floors. Nothing here is pretending to be a palace. What it is trying to be is the most useful address in Tallinn — and by the only measure that counts, 7 219 people scoring the location 9.6 out of 10, that is roughly what happened.
